Common Electrical Problems in Gold Coast Homes

The faults and questions homeowners call about most, what to check first, and where to read more. Most can wait for a booked visit. One cannot.

Warm, Buzzing or Scorched? Call Now.

A switchboard should be cool and silent. Warmth, a buzzing sound, a burning smell or scorch marks point to loose connections or overheating, and both are fire hazards. Stop using the affected circuits and call.

Common Questions

Electrical FAQs

Do I need a licensed electrician to replace a power point, fan or oven?

Yes. In Queensland, installing or moving a power point, replacing a light fitting, putting in a ceiling fan where a light was, and connecting an oven or other hardwired appliance are all electrical work that must be done by a licensed electrician. You can change a light bulb or fuse and reset a tripped circuit breaker or safety switch yourself. We quote these jobs for free before any work starts.

Will I get a certificate for the work?

Yes. Once electrical work is tested, the licensed electrical contractor must give you a certificate of testing and safety. It records what was tested, the test date and the contractor licence number, and certifies the work is electrically safe. Keep it with your property records.

Why does my safety switch keep tripping?

Before you reset it, check for a damaged or faulty appliance, or another reason it tripped. Then reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call a licensed electrician to find the fault. Resetting a safety switch is something you can do yourself; repairing the wiring is not.

Why do my lights flicker?

Start with the globe: changing it is a job you can do yourself. If the flicker continues, or lights dip whenever a big appliance starts, book a fault-finding visit. We test the circuit and trace the flicker back to its cause before quoting the repair. If flickering comes with a burning smell, buzzing or a warm switchboard, treat it as an emergency.

Do I have single-phase or three-phase power?

Single-phase supply comes into a home on 3 wires; three-phase uses 5 and supplies more power for more or larger appliances. We can confirm which you have from the meter and switchboard. Moving from single-phase to three-phase is arranged with your electricity distributor or retailer, with the work at your home done by a licensed electrician.

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

Frequent tripping, ceramic fuses, no safety switches, or a switchboard that is hot or scorched are all warning signs. We can inspect it and upgrade to modern safety switches.
