EV Charger Installation Gold Coast

Switchboard, supply and cable route checked on site first, so the quote is the price.

Ryder Electrical Services provides EV charger installation for houses, townhouses, apartments, workplaces and strata car parks across the Gold Coast up to Brisbane's north side. Installing a charger is electrical work, so in Queensland it must be done by a licensed electrician, and once the circuit is tested you are given a certificate of testing and safety.

The charger is the simple part. Whether it goes straight in depends on your switchboard and supply, so that is where every site check starts.

Before the quote

Is Your Switchboard Ready for an EV Charger?

A home charger draws a large current for hours at a time, so it gets its own circuit from the switchboard. That circuit needs a spare space on the board, its own RCD protection, and enough supply headroom to run alongside everything else in the house.

Since 2002, Queensland electricians have not been permitted to do installation work on a home without safety switches unless the work also fits one (some exceptions apply). On an older board with ceramic fuses, that usually means switchboard work comes first. The signs your switchboard needs upgrading are worth a look before the site check.

Where the board is sound but headroom is tight, a load-managing charger slows down while the house is busy and returns to full speed when it is not.

Single-phase or three-phase?

Single-phase
3 wiresSuits a 7kW home charger.
Three-phase
5 wiresMore capacity. Needed for 22kW AC charging.

We confirm which you have from the meter and switchboard. Moving from single to three-phase is arranged with your electricity distributor or retailer, and the work at your property is done by a licensed electrician.

EV Charger Installation Requirements

Four things need to be in place before a charger goes in, and the site check confirms each one. In a unit or townhouse, talk to your body corporate before any of it is booked.

  • Supply

Enough capacity at the meter for the charger alongside the rest of the house, on single or three-phase. Where it runs short, load management or a larger connection through your distributor are the options.

  • Switchboard

Room for a dedicated charger circuit with its own RCD, on a board with safety switches. A full or outdated board is sorted out first.

  • Charger location and cable run

A mounting spot the charge lead reaches without crossing a walkway, and a route from the board the cable can follow and be protected along: a roof space, a wall, or underground to a detached garage.

  • Licensed installation and certificate

Installing a charger is electrical work, which must be done by a licensed electrician. Once it is tested, the electrical contractor must give you a certificate of testing and safety recording what was tested, the test date and their licence number.

How each of these moves the price is covered in our guide to what affects the cost of EV charger installation on the Gold Coast.

Charge Your EV From Surplus Solar

With a solar-aware charger, the solar you would otherwise export for a feed-in credit goes into the car instead. It needs a compatible charger and a consumption meter at the switchboard, so decide before the install rather than after.

  1. Your panels generate

Through the day, the solar system supplies the house first.

  2. The meter sees the surplus

A consumption meter at the switchboard measures what would otherwise be exported to the grid.

  3. The charger takes it

A solar-aware charger adjusts its charging rate to match, so the car fills from your roof instead of the grid.

It works while the car is home in daylight. Overnight the charger draws from the grid on the schedule you set. No solar yet? See our solar installation service.

EV Chargers in Apartments and Townhouses

In a unit or townhouse block, the wiring to your car space, and sometimes the switchboard and meter, may be shared with other owners. Talk to your body corporate early, before choosing a charger, so the plan suits the building as well as your car.

Once you have the go-ahead, we check where the power will come from and the cable route to your bay, then quote the work in writing so the committee can see exactly what is proposed.

Worth raising with your body corporate

  • Where the charger's power comes from: your own meter and switchboard, or the building's common supply.
  • How charging is metered and paid for if it runs from a shared supply.
  • The cable route from the board to your car space through shared areas.
  • Whether the building's supply can take more chargers as other owners add them.

These are practical questions, not legal rules. Your body corporate or strata manager can tell you which approval process applies to your building.

Workplace and Strata EV Charging

Businesses and body corporates add chargers for staff, customers, fleet vehicles and residents. A multi-bay install is planned around the building's supply: with several cars plugged in at once, load management shares the available capacity between bays instead of every charger drawing full current together.

We quote commercial EV charger installation for workplaces, shops and strata car parks, and it sits alongside the rest of our commercial and strata electrical work.

EV Charger Stopped Working?

We repair and replace existing chargers too. If it trips, reset it once. If it trips again, stop using it and call us.

Common Questions

EV Charging FAQs

Do I need a home EV charger, or can I use a power point?

You can charge from a standard power point with the portable lead supplied with the car, but it is slow and runs a continuous load through a general-purpose circuit for hours at a time. A wall charger on its own circuit charges much faster and suits daily driving. Which makes sense depends on how far you drive and how long the car sits at home, and we check your switchboard and supply before recommending either.

Do I need a licensed electrician to install an EV charger?

Yes. In Queensland, installing an EV charger is electrical work, and electrical work must be carried out by a licensed electrician. Doing it without a licence is an offence under the Electrical Safety Act 2002.

What paperwork comes with an EV charger install?

Once the charger and its circuit are tested, the licensed electrical contractor must give you a certificate of testing and safety. It records what was tested, the test date and the contractor licence number, and certifies the installation is electrically safe. Keep it with your property records.

Will I need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?

Not always. The charger needs its own circuit, so the board needs a spare space and enough capacity, which we check on site. Since 2002, Queensland electricians have not been permitted to do installation work on a home without safety switches unless the work also fits one (some exceptions apply), so an older board without them needs that work first.

Can I install an EV charger in an apartment or unit?

Talk to your body corporate first, before any electrical work is booked. Once you have the go-ahead, we assess where the power will come from, the switchboard and the cable route to your car space, and quote the install.

7kW or 22kW: which charger do I need?

A 7kW charger suits most homes on single-phase power and charges overnight, while 22kW needs three-phase power and suits faster or business charging. We advise based on your car and switchboard.

Do I need three-phase power for a home EV charger?

Usually not. Most homes charge well on a 7kW single-phase charger. Three-phase is only needed for the fastest AC charging.

Related:How to know if you have three-phase

How long does EV charger installation take?

It depends on the job. A charger close to a modern switchboard is a smaller job than one that needs switchboard work, a long cable run or trenching to a detached garage. We confirm the timing after the site check.

Why does my EV charger keep tripping?

Check the charger, cable and plug for damage, then reset the circuit breaker or safety switch once. If it trips again, stop using the charger and call a licensed electrician. We repair and replace existing chargers as well as installing new ones.

Can I charge my EV from my solar?

Yes. With a solar-aware charger and a consumption meter at the switchboard, surplus solar that would otherwise be exported goes into the car while it is parked at home in daylight. Decide before the install, because the meter goes in at the switchboard.
