Safety Switch Installation on the Gold Coast
Safety switches added to your switchboard or replaced by licensed electricians, tested afterwards and certified.
Ryder Electrical Services installs and replaces safety switches on the Gold Coast up to Brisbane's north side. A safety switch, also called an RCD, is the device on your switchboard with a T or Test button, and it is the part that protects people. Every one is fitted and tested by licensed electricians, and you are given the certificate Queensland law requires once the work is tested.
If the whole board is the problem, see our switchboard upgrade service. Safety switches are one part of our residential electrical work.
Safety Switch or Circuit Breaker?
They sit side by side on the board but do different jobs. In the Electrical Safety Office's words, circuit breakers and surge protectors protect appliances, not people. Only safety switches protect people, and a board with only circuit breakers has none.
Our guide to the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker covers how each works and how to check what your own board has. For the short version, see our safety switch FAQ.

Queensland Safety Switch Rules
Two dated rules come up most often. Whether your home is covered depends on its history, so ask an electrician to check which circuits your board protects.
- Since 2006
- Domestic rental properties, such as homes and flats, have needed safety switches fitted to the power points.
- Since 2002
- Licensed electricians have not been permitted to do installation work on a home without safety switches unless the work also fits one. Some exceptions applied.
Renting out a property? Safety switches are one duty and interconnected smoke alarms are another. Adding a circuit for an EV charger is installation work, so the 2002 rule above applies to it too.

Adding Safety Switches or Replacing the Board
The inspection decides which. You are quoted for the actual job before anything is booked.
Add to your board
Where the board is in good order and has room, safety switches can be fitted to protect the circuits that have none.
Replace the board
Where the board runs ceramic fuses or has no room, replacing it with circuit breakers and safety switches may be the better job.
Replacing the board is covered on our switchboard upgrade page. Not sure which you need? Read the signs your switchboard needs upgrading and the comparison of an old fuse box and a modern switchboard.
Our suburb pages describe what we see locally: older boards in Southport, cottage additions in Burleigh Heads, Queenslanders in Brisbane and 1990s boards in Robina.
Testing Your Safety Switches
Testing and resetting are the jobs a homeowner may do. Repairing the cause of a trip is not.
Every three months, press the T or Test button on each safety switch, then switch it back on.
If a safety switch trips in normal use, check for a damaged or unsafe appliance or another reason it tripped before you reset it.
Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call a licensed electrician. A homeowner may reset a safety switch but not repair wiring.
Sparks, a burning smell or a board that is warm or buzzing? Use the 24/7 emergency line. If an EV charger's circuit keeps tripping, see EV charger repair.

What's Involved in Fitting a Safety Switch
The same sequence applies to every job, and nothing starts until you have approved the quote.

Inspect the board
A licensed electrician checks which circuits your safety switches protect, what the board has room for and whether it is in a state to take more.
Quote the job
You get a free, no-obligation quote for the actual job, whether that is adding safety switches or replacing the board. Nothing is booked until you have approved it.
Plan the power-off
Power to the affected circuits is off while the work is done, so the timing is agreed with you in advance.
Fit the safety switches
The safety switches are installed and each circuit is connected to its protection on the board.
Test the work
Queensland law requires electrical work to be tested afterwards, to make sure everything it affected is electrically safe.
Certificate of testing and safety
As soon as practicable after testing, the electrical contractor must give you this certificate. It records your name and address, what was tested, the test date and the contractor licence number.

Common Questions
Safety Switch Installation FAQs
Are safety switches compulsory in Queensland?
It depends on the home. Rental properties have needed safety switches on their power points since 2006, and since 2002 licensed electricians have not been permitted to do installation work on a home without safety switches unless the work also fits one, with some exceptions. What your home needs depends on its history, so ask an electrician to check your board.

Does a rental property need safety switches?
Yes. Since 2006, domestic rental properties such as homes and flats have needed safety switches fitted to the power points. Fitting them is electrical work, so it needs a licensed electrician.

Can a safety switch be added to an old fuse board?
It depends on the board. A licensed electrician inspects it first. Some boards can take safety switches, and others are better replaced with circuit breakers and safety switches. You are quoted for whichever job the inspection points to.

What is the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker?
Only safety switches protect people. Circuit breakers and surge protectors protect appliances, not people. A safety switch has a T or Test button, which a plain circuit breaker does not.

How often should I test my safety switches?
Every three months, as the Electrical Safety Office advises. Press the T or Test button on each safety switch, then switch it back on.

Will I get a certificate after a safety switch is installed?
Yes. Once the work is tested, the licensed electrical contractor must give you a certificate of testing and safety as soon as practicable. It records who the work was for, what was tested, the test date and the contractor licence number, and certifies the equipment is electrically safe to the extent the work affected it.
