Solar Battery Installation on the Gold Coast

Batteries for new or existing solar, installed by licensed electricians who check the inverter and switchboard before anything is quoted.

Ryder Electrical Services installs solar batteries across the Gold Coast up to Brisbane's north side, including the Tesla Powerwall and Enphase batteries. A battery stores the daytime solar you would otherwise export, so you can use it in the evening. This page covers the installation: what we check first, how the federal program fits in, and what the work involves.

Still deciding whether a battery suits your household? Read whether a solar battery is worth it first. Panels are covered on our solar installation page.

Adding a Battery to Existing Solar, or a New System

The starting point decides the work. Both routes begin with the same assessment.

A battery added to existing solar

Your existing inverter decides the route: a hybrid inverter takes a battery directly, while many older string inverters are better paired with a separate battery inverter or an AC-coupled battery. We check the inverter model, your usage and the board before recommending either.

A new solar and battery system

Designed together, the inverter, panels and battery are chosen as one system, and the switchboard is checked once. A battery-ready inverter also means a battery can wait, without replacing the inverter later.

Retrofitting is common in Robina, where we check the existing inverter model first. In Coomera, new builds often have solar but no battery plan, and Nerang properties often ask about backup circuits. Planning panels as well? See how to size a solar system.

Is Your Inverter and Switchboard Ready for a Battery?

A battery is new equipment connected at your board and tied to your inverter. Three things are checked before the quote.

  1. Your supply

Single-phase supply comes in on 3 wires and three-phase on 5. If you have single-phase supply, the inverter must be single-phase. Three-phase supply can use either.

  2. Your inverter

Whether it is battery-ready, and how a battery would connect to it. Our string, microinverter and optimiser guide explains the types.

  3. Your switchboard

A battery is new equipment connected at the board, and an older board may need work first. We look at it during the assessment, not after the quote.

If the board is the limit, the answer may be a switchboard upgrade first. The signs an older board needs replacing are worth knowing, and how to tell single-phase from three-phase is answered on our FAQ page.

Federal battery program

How the Cheaper Home Batteries Program Reaches You

The Australian Government's program gives a discount of around 30% on the upfront cost of an eligible 5 to 100 kWh battery. You do not apply to the government for it: the installer or retailer delivers it, either as a reduction on the price or as a rebate after installation.

The discount is set by the date the battery is installed and steps down every six months. The current rate, the dates and the worked examples are in our guide to the solar battery rebate in Queensland, so they are not repeated here.

This is general information about the program. Whether a battery qualifies, and how much applies on the day it is installed, is confirmed in your quote.

What the program requires

  • Installed on or after 1 July 2025.
  • A 5 kWh to 100 kWh battery connected to new or existing solar.
  • Battery and inverter approved by the Clean Energy Council.
  • On-grid systems, including the inverter, able to join a virtual power plant (VPP).
  • Installed by a Solar Accreditation Australia accredited installer who is on site for installation and commissioning.
  • One battery system per premises, the first time one is installed, added to or replaced.
  • Portable batteries and electric vehicles are not eligible.

Batteries We Install, and Backup in an Outage

We install the Tesla Powerwall and Enphase batteries, and we install and service solar systems with Fronius, SolarEdge and Enphase inverters. Which pairing suits you depends on your existing inverter and your evening use, and our guide to choosing a solar battery covers what to compare.

Backup is not automatic. A battery keeps the house running in a blackout only if it was specified for backup, with those circuits wired for it at installation. The full answer is in the worth-it guide. If the power is out and something is unsafe right now, use our 24/7 emergency electrician line.

Charging an EV as well? Surplus solar and a battery both raise the demand on your board, so plan them together with our EV charger installation service.

What's Involved in a Battery Installation

The same five steps apply to a new system and to a battery added to existing solar.

  1. Assess

Your recent bills, how much solar you export and what you use after dark, plus the existing system.

  2. Check

The supply phase, the inverter and the switchboard, before a battery is chosen.

  3. Quote

The equipment, any switchboard work, and what the federal program means for your installation date.

  4. Install and commission

A licensed electrician installs and connects the battery, then commissions it.

  5. Test and certify

The work is tested and you are given a certificate of testing and safety, recording the licence number.

Common Questions

Solar Battery Installation FAQs

Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?

Yes, in most cases. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program covers batteries connected to new or existing solar. The battery and inverter must be Clean Energy Council approved, an on-grid system must be able to join a virtual power plant, and existing solar must meet electrical safety requirements. Your installer checks the inverter and switchboard first.

Do I apply for the battery discount myself?

No. Under the program you do not apply to the Department or the Clean Energy Regulator. The installer or retailer delivers the discount, either as an upfront reduction on the price or as a rebate after installation. Whether it applies to your battery, and how, is confirmed in your quote.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade for a battery?

Not always. A battery is new equipment connected at the switchboard, and an older board may need work first. An electrician checks the board, the supply and the inverter during the assessment, so any upgrade is on the quote before work starts.

Will a battery work in a blackout?

Only if it was specified for backup. A standard grid-connected system shuts down in an outage, and backup needs equipment that can run the house off-grid and backed-up circuits wired for it at installation.

What accreditation does a battery installer need?

To claim small-scale technology certificates, the installer must be accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia and hold an unrestricted electrical licence. In Queensland, connecting a battery is also electrical work that needs a licensed electrician. RES holds QLD electrical licence 92423, and you can ask for our accreditation details with your quote.
