Switchboard Upgrades Gold Coast

Old fuse boards replaced with circuit breakers and safety switches by licensed electricians, with a free quote before work starts.

Ryder Electrical Services does switchboard upgrades on the Gold Coast up to Brisbane's north side, replacing old fuse boards and tired switchboards with modern circuit breakers and safety switches. Every board is installed and tested by licensed electricians, and you are given the certificate Queensland law requires once the work is tested.

Not sure yours needs replacing? Start with the signs your switchboard needs upgrading. Switchboards are one part of our residential electrical work; boards in shops, offices and other business premises are handled as commercial switchboard work.

When Is a Switchboard Upgrade Worth It?

Four signs come up most often. Any one of them is a reason to have the board looked at.

  • Ceramic fuses

Rewireable fuses you pull out and re-wire by hand, rather than circuit breakers you reset with a switch.

  • No safety switches

No T or Test buttons on the board usually means no safety switches, and nothing there to protect people from electric shock.

  • Warm, buzzing or scorched

Treat this one as urgent. Stop using the affected circuits and call the 24/7 line on 0429 391 505.

  • No room for what comes next

A full board has nowhere to add the circuit that solar, a battery or an EV charger needs.

The full list, including tripping and flickering lights and what each sign means, is in 7 Signs Your Switchboard Needs Upgrading.

Fuse Box Replacement and Safety Switches

“Only safety switches save lives.”

Electrical Safety Office, Queensland

Rewireable fuses and circuit breakers cut the power when a circuit overloads. In the Electrical Safety Office's words, circuit breakers and surge protectors protect appliances, not people. That job belongs to safety switches, and Queensland has tied them to two rules homeowners should know.

Since 2006
Domestic rental properties, such as homes and flats, have needed safety switches fitted to the power points.
Since 2002
Licensed electricians have not been permitted to do installation work on a home without safety switches unless the work also fits one. Some exceptions applied.

Test yours every three months. Press the T or Test button on each safety switch, then switch it back on.

Each of these connects back to the switchboard. The board needs room for the new circuit and its protection, and it has to carry the extra load on top of what the house already draws. Upgrading the board alongside the new equipment means one job and one outage, not two.

The switchboard is your side of the connection. Connection limits are set by the electricity network, and increasing the capacity of the supply, such as moving from single-phase to three-phase, starts with your distributor or retailer. The work on your property is done by a licensed electrician.

What's Involved in a Switchboard Upgrade

Every upgrade follows the same sequence, and nothing starts until you have approved the quote.

No two boards are the same job. Our guide to what affects the cost of a switchboard upgrade explains why quotes differ.

  1. Inspect the board

A licensed electrician looks at the switchboard, the circuits running from it and the metering, and asks what you plan to add, such as solar, a battery or an EV charger.

  2. Quote the job

You get a free, no-obligation quote for the actual job. Nothing is booked until you have approved it.

  3. Plan the power-off

The power is off while the board is changed over, so the timing is agreed with you in advance, along with any disconnection the job needs.

  4. Replace the board

The old fuses or board come out. Circuit breakers and safety switches go in, and each circuit is reconnected to the new board.

  5. Test the work

Queensland law requires electrical work to be tested afterwards, to make sure everything it affected is electrically safe.

  6. Certificate of testing and safety

As soon as practicable after testing, the electrical contractor must give you this certificate. It records your name and address, what was tested, the test date and the contractor licence number.

  7. Certificate of testing and compliance

Where the worked-on installation is connected to supply, this second certificate confirms it was tested as electrically safe and complies with the wiring rules.

Common Questions

Switchboard Upgrade FAQs

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

It depends on the board and on what the inspection finds, so no fixed time is promised online. The power is off while the board is changed over, and that outage is planned with you in advance. The quote sets out what the job covers before anything is booked.

Can I upgrade my switchboard myself?

No. Switchboard work is electrical work, and in Queensland a person must not perform electrical work without an electrical licence that authorises it. Homeowners are limited to jobs such as changing a light bulb or a fuse and resetting a circuit breaker or safety switch.

Do rental properties need safety switches in Queensland?

Yes. Since 2006, domestic rental properties such as homes and flats have needed safety switches fitted to the power points. Only safety switches protect people; circuit breakers and surge protectors protect appliances.

Will an electrician fit safety switches when doing other work on my home?

Usually, if your home has none. Since 2002, licensed electricians have not been permitted to do installation work on a home without safety switches unless the work also includes fitting one, with some exceptions. That is why adding a circuit to a home with no safety switches usually brings them in too.

How often should I test my safety switches?

Every three months, as the Electrical Safety Office advises. Press the T or Test button on each safety switch, then switch it back on.

My fuse keeps blowing. What should I do?

Switch off and unplug the equipment on that circuit and turn off the main switch before re-wiring the fuse, using fuse wire of the correct rating. If the fuse blows again with the equipment unplugged, call a licensed electrician. Replacing the fuse board with circuit breakers and safety switches ends the re-wiring for good.

What certificates will I get after a switchboard upgrade?

Once the work is tested, the licensed electrical contractor must give you a certificate of testing and safety as soon as practicable. It records who the work was for, what was tested, the test date and the contractor licence number. Where the worked-on installation is connected to supply, a certificate of testing and compliance also confirms it complies with the wiring rules. The contractor keeps a copy of each for at least five years.
