Your Local Burleigh Heads Electrician
Burleigh Heads has changed faster than almost any suburb on the coast. The fibro and brick cottages behind the headland are being renovated or replaced one by one, the cafe strip along James Street keeps expanding, and the beachfront apartment blocks sit right in the salt spray. Each of those creates a different kind of electrical job.
Ryder Electrical Services works the southern coastal strip from Burleigh down to the border, and knows what this environment does to electrical installations.
Renovation Rewiring: Our Most Common Burleigh Job
Burleigh's older housing stock is being reworked constantly, and renovation is the moment when wiring problems surface. Opening up a ceiling exposes what has been sitting above it since the 1960s.
What we look for and what it means:
- Rubber-insulated cabling - perishes and cracks with age. If it is still present it needs replacing, not extending.
- Early PVC from the 1960s and 1970s - usually serviceable, but brittle at terminations where heat has cycled.
- Owner-built additions - patios, sheds and granny flats wired without a licence are common in this area, and are frequently the reason a safety switch keeps tripping.
- Original switchboards - almost always need replacing before new circuits can be added, because there is no capacity left.
Our approach is to inspect the roof space first and tell you honestly whether you need a full rewire or a switchboard upgrade plus new circuits in the renovated zone. The second option is far cheaper and is genuinely the right answer more often than not.

Coastal Corrosion: What We Do Differently
Within a few streets of the beach, standard electrical hardware fails early. We specify for the environment rather than to the minimum standard:
- Weatherproof IP-rated enclosures on all external outlets
- Stainless steel fixings rather than zinc-plated
- Marine-grade external light fittings
- Air conditioning condensers positioned out of direct salt spray where the layout allows, with coil treatment where it does not
- Sealed and correctly glanded external conduit entries
It is a small cost difference at installation and the reason we are not back replacing the same fitting three years later.
