EV Charger Repair Gold Coast

Licensed repairs for home and business chargers that won't charge, keep tripping or show a fault.

Ryder Electrical Services provides EV charger repair on the Gold Coast for chargers that have stopped charging, keep tripping or are showing a fault. RES repairs most home and commercial charger brands, including chargers someone else installed, and every repair looks at the charger, its circuit and the switchboard behind it.

Repairing a charger is electrical work, so in Queensland it must be done by a licensed electrician. Looking for a new charger rather than a fix? See our EV charger installation service.

Signs Your EV Charger Needs a Repair

These are the problems owners usually notice first. Each one can start in the charger, its circuit or the switchboard, which is why the diagnosis covers all three.

  • Not charging

The car is plugged in but nothing happens, or charging starts and then stops partway through.

  • Fault or error lights

A warning light on the unit, a fault code, or an error message in the charger's app.

  • Keeps tripping

The safety switch or circuit breaker for the charger trips when charging starts or while the car is charging.

  • Damaged cable, plug or unit

A cut or crushed lead, a damaged plug, or a housing that is cracked, hot or scorched. Stop using it.

  • Charger offline

The charger has dropped off its app or network, so it can't be monitored or controlled from your phone.

  • No power at all

No lights and no response from the charger, even though the rest of the house has power.

What You Can Safely Check First

With a charger, your part is resetting a tripped safety switch or circuit breaker. The repair itself is a job for a licensed electrician.

  1. If the charger, lead or plug is damaged, hot or scorched, stop using it and don't touch the damaged part.

  2. Look up the error light or code in the charger maker's app or manual. It may tell you what the charger has detected.

  3. At the switchboard, see whether the charger's safety switch or circuit breaker has tripped. Before resetting it, check for damaged equipment or another reason it tripped.

  4. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off, stop using the charger and call a licensed electrician.

  5. Don't open the charger or try to repair it. Repairing electrical equipment is electrical work, and in Queensland it needs an electrical licence.

Why the Circuit and Switchboard Matter

A home charger draws a large current for hours at a time from its own circuit. When it stops working, the fault can sit in the charger, in that circuit or back at the switchboard, so a repair that only looks at the charger can miss it.

The safety switch on the charger's circuit is the part that protects people. Circuit breakers and surge protectors protect appliances, not people, so a safety switch that keeps tripping is worth taking seriously.

Where the board itself is the problem, such as no room for the charger's protection or no safety switches at all, the right fix may be a switchboard upgrade rather than a charger repair.

  1. Switchboard

The main switch, plus the safety switch and circuit breaker protecting the charger's circuit.

  2. Circuit

The cable run from the board to the charger, and every connection along it.

  3. Charger

The unit itself, its charging lead and plug, and its settings.

What's Involved in an EV Charger Repair

The same four steps apply whether the charger is in a home garage or a business car park.

  1. Diagnose the whole circuit

The charger, its circuit and protection, and the switchboard are tested to find where the fault actually is.

  2. Repair or replace

The faulty part is repaired or replaced. If the unit itself has failed, a replacement charger is quoted before any work goes ahead.

  3. Test

The charger and its circuit are tested after the work, to make sure everything the repair touched is electrically safe.

  4. Certificate of testing and safety

You are given a certificate recording what was tested, the test date and the electrical contractor licence number.

If the diagnosis shows a new charger is the better fix, the replacement is quoted first, and you can read how a new charger is installed before deciding.

Common Questions

EV Charger Repair FAQs

Do you repair EV chargers you didn't install?

Yes. We repair most home and commercial charger brands, whoever installed them. The diagnosis covers the charger, its circuit and the switchboard, so the fault is found wherever it sits.

Why does my EV charger keep tripping?

A trip is the safety switch or circuit breaker cutting the power. Check the charger, lead and plug for damage or another reason for the trip, then reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off, stop using the charger and call a licensed electrician to find the fault.

My EV charger has stopped charging. What should I check?

Look up any error light or code in the charger maker's app or manual, then check the switchboard for a tripped safety switch or circuit breaker. Check for damage or another reason for the trip before resetting it once. If it trips again, or the charger still won't charge, book a repair.

Can I repair my EV charger myself?

No. Repairing electrical equipment is electrical work, and in Queensland electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician. A homeowner may reset a tripped circuit breaker or safety switch, but shouldn't open the charger or work on its wiring.

Will I get a certificate after an EV charger repair?

Yes. Once the repair is tested, the licensed electrical contractor must give you a certificate of testing and safety. It records what was tested, the test date and the contractor licence number, and certifies the work is electrically safe.

Should I repair or replace my EV charger?

It depends on what the diagnosis finds. Where a part or connection is at fault, repairing it is usually the job. Where the unit itself has failed, we quote a replacement before any work goes ahead, and if the switchboard is the problem we explain what it needs.
